Private Scholarships
Millions of private
scholarships are offered by private companies, clubs,
civic groups, and other organizations. These awards amount to billions of
dollars in scholarship funds to American students each year! Criteria for
private scholarships may be academic in nature, such as a certain GPA or ACT
score, or they may be based on characteristics of you or your family. For
example, you may be able to win a scholarship for being active or taking a
leadership role in a club, choosing a certain major, or for participating in
community service activities. You can find information about many of these
private scholarships through free scholarship search websites such as these:
Be sure to visit our
Helpful Hints
page, with information about how to organize your scholarship search and write
the perfect scholarship essay. You can also find great information about all
types of financial aid, including private scholarships, on the
Cash for College website.
Beware of Scams!
In your search for money for college, be careful to
watch for people who just want your money. If someone asks you to pay for
scholarship information, just say no! The information is available without
charge through other sources, such as a high school guidance office or the above
websites.
I Got One! Now What?
If you receive a private scholarship, please send a copy
of your scholarship award letter and/or scholarship check to the Financial Aid
Office at the address below. Check to make sure your full name and your MTSU ID
number are on the check or an accompanying letter, as well as any special
instructions from the lender.
Attn: Scholarship Dept
218 Cope Administration Building
Murfreesboro, TN 37129
When you submit a copy of the award letter, we will be happy to
place a scholarship deferment on your account. This will let the Business
Office know that you are expecting a scholarship, and the deferment may reduce
the amount of money you need to pay out-of-pocket by the Fee Payment Deadline.
When we receive the scholarship check, we will generally apply
it to your account within 2 business days; delays may occur if the check
requires your endorsement or if we need additional information. We will divide
the scholarship into two equal portions for fall and spring, unless the
scholarship donor provides alternate instructions in an accompanying letter.
